I’m new to this (July, 2013.)  My mother is 88 years old, has mild-to-moderate dementia, poor hearing, painful arthritis, and has moved in with us on our farm.  I know I have a lot to learn and have some eye-opening challenges ahead of me, but I can’t bear to see my mother miserable and waiting to die in assisted living or worse yet – a nursing home.  I’m sure I can make the rest of her life better and perhaps even give her a reason to live.  I’d want someone to do it for me…

  1. Wow — our stories are very similar. I’ve been doing this for 7 years, so maybe some of my earlier posts will help you learn from my mistakes. 🙂 Feel free to contact me if you have questions or just need to vent. I am NOT a medical professional either, but they say you have to do something for 10,000 hours to get good at it, right? I don’t know the exact figure but some simple math tells me I have more than that amount of time in. Good luck with your Mom.

  2. We hired a Polish woman to live in 5 days a week and care for my father-in-law. ( He had epilepsy and Alzheimers). She was a saint and very patient with him. Every one needs to find a system that works for them. We also had a Ukrainian woman come to my mother’s home 5 days a week to help with her care.( after her heart attack, etc.)until my mother was hospitalized and in and out of rehabilitation. My sister worked full time as lived with my mother during her last several years. Be flexible as over time you may need more help and cannot do everything yourself.

  3. You are my twin! One of the important things I’ve learned is that none of us is alone in this and that we MUST communicate — talk, cry, and support each other. You’re awesome!
